The Yankees made some moves at the trade deadline that could be interesting.
Gaining Stephen Drew from the Red Sox was certainly a surprise to me. I did not expect it and was not happy. Drew had done so little as a Red Sox player this year, why would we benefit from having him?
But, alas he has played well as a Yankee and has helpped put life into the struggling offense. A few key hits and now General Manager Brian Cashman seems to have made the right move.
I said basically the same thing about Chase Headley. I am only hoping I can say the same about Martin Prado.
We took no pitchers at the deadline. We did get some earlier and even those guys are pitching well.
Both Masahiro Tanaka and Michael Pineda will be back in a few weeks. There is also the waiver wire to keep an eye on.
This team can get on a roll.
There are two players I need to focus on – Brett Gardner and David Robertson.
Gardner has been clutch. He was named offensive player of the week and really is playing well.
A lot of people have been calling for him to be our next captain.
I don’t see that happening soon. However, if he continues his present ways, anything is possible.
As for Robertson, I never liked him. Many ninth innings are a challenge. He has played better than I thought. Next year I would rather see Dellin Betances as the closer.
Even when interviewed Robertson is not likable. He appears arrogant and not down to earth.
Betances is our future closer. Robertson should be let go at the end of the season.
I was certainly proud to see the Yankees win 2 out of 3 over Boston last weekend. And the Yanks played well against Detroit.
Although I still don’t see the Yankees as World Series bound, some new hope and enthusiasm has been brought to this team.
Let’s just hope it lasts at least another month.
