Little Leagues Complete Their Season; Look Forward to the Future

With school out and summer just beginning, the two baseball leagues in town have wrapped up their season and are looking forward to the future.

Jim Wyskiewicz, President of the New Britain Fagan Cal Ripken League, is satisfied with the outcome of their 2014 season.

“The Fagan Baseball League was able to increase the amount of teams in the TBALL, Rookie and Minor divisions. We were proud to welcome US Senator Blumenthal to our Opening Day. We were pleased with the level of play at all of our divisions.”

In the Majors Division, the White Sox defeated the defending champions, the Dodgers in two games. As of press time, the Minors Division Championship Series between the White Sox and the Tigers had not yet been completed.

Once the Minors Championship Series is over, the league will turn its focus to district tournaments that players will participate in throughout the summer against surrounding towns. They will also be offering a fall season. After a few short months of downtime, they will kick off the 2015 season with winter clinics, which will begin in January.

Wyskiewicz hopes that the success of this season translates into much more success down the road.

“My hope is to continue to provide an affordable opportunity for children across the greater New Britain area to learn and play the game of baseball. I have other lofty goals that I will be discussing with our executive board in the very near future,” he said. “In addition, I’d like to thank the executive board and all of our coaches, parents and volunteers who helped this season to be one of the best seasons we’ve had in quite some time. There is a lot of excitement in our league and we can’t wait until next season!”

In New Britain Little League, three division champions were crowned over the past two weeks. In the Minors Division, the Phillies defeated the Orioles, 13-6. It was an intense game until the last inning when the Phillies broke it open, scoring eight runs to seal the game. Coming up huge for the Phillies was Amaziah Tejada, who hit an inside the park grand-slam! Will Estranza pitched a great game for the Orioles before reaching his pitch count limit.

In the Majors Division, the Dodgers defeated the Mets in a best of three championship series. In game one of the championship series, the Dodgers defeated the Mets 7-4 and in game two, they defeated the Mets 4-3. Throughout the series, the Dodgers were led on offense by Melvin Rodriguez, Isaac Burgos and Nigel Crundwell. Joshua Manning and Kevin Richardson also helped lead the way in game two with huge hits in key situations, driving in a combined four runs. On defense, they were led by Christopher Gibbs on the mound and saw excellent defense from Michael Gajda. For the Mets, Danniel Rivera, Ana Olis and Pedro Garcia led the way on both offense and defense.

The Red Sox were the Seniors Division Champions, defeating the Mets in a best of three series. In game one of the championship series, the Red Sox defeated the Mets 14-4 and in game two, they defeated them 12-1. Leading the way for the Red Sox both on offense and defense were Miguel Sanchez and Zachary Connolly.

Vice-President Richard Gadomski believes that overall, the 2014 season in NBLL was one that taught the kids the fundamentals of the game and made them better ballplayers, thus making it a successful one.

“The 2014 season was a tremendous success. I can say with a lot of confidence that every kid in our league is a better ballplayer now than they were when we started winter clinics back in January. Our focus isn’t on winning and losing – it’s about the development of a ballplayer throughout their entire youth baseball career.”

NBLL will now turn its focus to their 11U and 12U traveling all – star teams. They will begin their respective tournaments on Friday, June 27 and will play against other towns such as Berlin, Plainville, Southington, Farmington and others. After that, they will begin their fall season at the

end of August and it will run until the end of October.
