NBHS Sports Programs Holding Annual Fundraisers

The basketball and football programs at New Britain High School are each gearing up for their annual fundraisers that will be held in June.

The basketball program, which is overseen by Todd Stigliano, will be holding their annual golf tournament on Saturday, June 7 at Stanley Golf Course. The team is coming off a season that culminated with a division championship as well as a trip to the Elite Eight in the state tournament.

“This golf tournament is the main fundraising event for our program each year. No donation, monetary or otherwise, is ever too small,” Stigliano said. “All proceeds from the fundraiser will benefit the NBHS Boys’ Basketball program. Money raised will be used for new equipment, uniforms, team meals, warm-ups and team building activities. A portion of the proceeds will also go into the Greg Jurczyk Memorial Scholarship Fund. Each year, we award scholarships to our graduating seniors in honor of Greg, NBHS class of 2006.”

Registration will begin at 11 a.m. and there will be a Shotgun start at noon. It is $125 per person with a maximum of four people allowed in each group. Awards will be given out for longest drive, closest to the pin, first place low gross, second place low gross, first place low net and second place low net. If you don’t want to take part in the golf tournament, Stigliano says that you can still participate later in the day.

“You don’t have to be a golfer to join in the fun,” he said. “If you are interested in joining us for good company, good prizes, and a great meal then please join us for dinner at the St. Maurice Church on Wightman Road at 5 p.m.”

Tickets for the dinner only are $25 per person. Stigliano is accepting any type of gift – whether large or small – that will be used as raffle prizes. For further information regarding the tournament, you can contact Stigliano at 860 –280-5849 or via e-mail at

The football program, which is overseen by Tebucky Jones, is coming off a season which saw many ups and downs but with flashes of potential for the upcoming season. Jones is entering his fourth season at the helm and after an offseason filled with controversy, he’s ready to get back on the field and get the program back to its winning ways.

The New Britain Friends of Football are hoping you can help towards that goal when they hold their annual 21 and over social on Friday, June 6 at 7 p.m. The event will take place at the VFW on Veterans Drive and is $25 per person. There will be a wide assortment of food and beverages include a pasta dinner, salad, grinders, platters and other delicious cuisine. Beverage sponsors include Stew Leonard’s wines and Harpoon Brewery. Free wine and beer tasting will be available. In addition, there will be a 50/50 raffle, a prize raffle and a silent auction.

The Friends of Football is an organization that gives more than 100 New Britain football players and cheerleaders the opportunity to participate in the fall football program as well as learn life lessons while representing their community.

All of the proceeds from the social will benefit the NBHS Football and Cheerleading Programs and Scholarships. More specifically, the money will be used to purchase new equipment, pre-game meals, scholarships and their annual pre-season football camp that is held at Camp Niantic.

For ticket information, you can contact Sharon Lapila at the NBHS main office at 860-225-6300 or Gayle Connolly at 860-690-7923.
