John Campbell Square Monument Names Published

This week the City Journal is printing the names on the plaque from the John Campbell Square WWII Monument on Stanley Street and Hillcrest Ave. in the Belvidere section of the City. The plaque was removed for safekeeping after the monument was severely damaged by a vehicle about two years ago. Many thanks to Mike Hadvab, New Britain Superintendent of Parks, who took sectional photos of the plaque so that the names could be transcribed.

The plaque shows the names of 346 Belvidere residents who served in World War II. Nine of the names, including John H. Campbell, have a star next to them to indicate that they died in service to their country. One of the stars highlights the name of WWII-era Commander-in-Chief Franklin D. Roosevelt, who must have been considered an honorary Belvidere resident. The list includes a dozen females and multiple listings for several families. There are four listings for surnames Beveridge, Gagliardi, and Ziegler, plus many more with triple and double listings, not to mention six Smith listings.

One of the more recognizable names is Harrison J. Kaiser, who was the first head coach of the Teachers College of Connecticut (now Central Connecticut State University). He held that position for nine seasons, from 1935 until 1947, taking three years “off” during the War. He lived on Eddy Glover Blvd. Kaiser Hall on the CCSU campus is named for him.

We’re asking City Journal readers – particularly Belvidere residents, past and present – to check the list for people you may know and to make a donation in their memory to help cover the cost of the walkway and landscaping portion of the monument restoration, estimated at $10,000.

The City Journal will continue to accept donation checks made out to the New Britain Parks & Recreation Dept. If you would like to donate in memory of someone who served in World War II, or any other person, please indicate it on your check or in an accompanying note. Help us put the finishing touches on a worthwhile project.

Send checks made out to “The New Britain Parks & Recreation Department” c/o New Britain City Journal, PO Box 2111, New Britain, CT 06050.
