Campbell Square Monument Update
In mid-March the New Britain City Journal ran a story about seeking donations to support the restoration of the John Campbell Square WWII Monument on Stanley Street and Hillcrest Ave. in the Belvidere section of the City. The monument was severely damaged by a vehicle about two years ago. A contract has been awarded to restore the monument itself, but not the walkway or surrounding landscaping, for which there is no funding.
Alderman Don Naples, a Belvidere resident, is coordinating a campaign to raise money for the walkway and landscaping, estimated to cost about $10,000. The Journal agreed to collect donation checks made out to the New Britain Parks & Recreation Dept. Nearly $700 has been collected so far. Alderman Naples has compiled a list of the 346 veterans’ names on the Monument plaque.
We will continue to accept donation checks and hope to print the list of names on the plaque next week, to encourage friends and relatives to make a donation in memory of those who served.
