Annual Fishing Derby Planned for April 16

The New Britain Parks and Recreation Department is accepting registrations for its annual TD Bank Fishing Derby at Doerr Pond in Martha Hart Park. The event is held in New Britain on Saturday, April 16, from 9 a.m. to noon. Participants 15 years of age and younger are eligible to register for the children’s division and people over the age of 16 must register in the adult division. Children registered before 4 p.m. on Friday, April 15, receive a free gift bag the day of the derby (while supplies last). Participants that qualify for the children’s division and are not pre-registered must pay a $1 entry fee on the day of the Derby. Adult participants can pre-register for $8 or pay $10 on the day of the event.  Registrants must supply their own rods, bait and tackle to participate.  Registration forms are available in the Recreation Office, Room 302, of City Hall. Those not pre-registered do not receive a gift bag.  City Hall is located on 27 West Main St.

There are four children’s age groups: under 5 years of age, 5 to 8 years, 9 to 12 years, and 13 to 15 years of age.  Prizes for the heaviest fish, longest fish and the most fish caught (which means NO LIMITS!) is awarded to each specific age group.

“This annual event is a popular favorite of New Britain residents, regardless of age or skill,” says Recreation Supervisor Barbara Zakrzewski. “At our derby anyone can catch a trophy trout.”  Since local businesses, clubs and private donors sponsor tagged fish, children receive savings bonds valued at $50 – $200. A child who hooks a small trout may also be hooking a $200 savings bond.”

Mayor Timothy Stewart challenges potential sponsors to join him in making a contribution to this year’s event.  Sponsors may contribute donations of $200 for Gold Sponsorship, $100 for Silver Sponsorship or $50 for Bronze.  Individuals, organizations or businesses interested in sponsoring a fish need to contact Barbara Zakrzewski at 860-826-3358. Adults who catch tagged fish receive prizes, but are not eligible for savings bonds.

We are pleased to announce TD Bank’s involvement once again in our annual Fishing Derby. For the 8th consecutive year, TD Bank’s contribution of $1,500 as Title Sponsor stocks the pond with trout for the derby.  Last years winners selected their own prize from a table of sporting goods and equipment such as rods, reels, tackle boxes, bait buckets, stringers, worm boxes, etc.   Once again, individuals, organizations or businesses interested in sponsoring a tagged fish need to contact Barbara Zakrzewski at 860-826-3360.

New Britain Parks and Recreation Department accepts registrations on a first-come first-serve basis.  Daily registrations are accepted 8:30 a.m. to 3:45 p.m., Monday – Friday, in the Recreation Office located at 27 West Main St., Room 302.  Mail-in registrations are also accepted.  Call the Parks and Recreation office at 826-3360 for registration forms or more information.
