Parks League Holds Championship Games

This past weekend, the New Britain Parks and Recreation Basketball league wrapped up their season with the elementary school and middle school division championship games.

The elementary school championship game was between the Pizza Pal Bulls and the Capitol Lunch Celtics with the Bulls coming out on top 18-16. The Bulls, coached by Johnny Valez, were led by James Jones, who scored nine points throughout the game. Tyshawn Johnson added two points, which proved to be critical in the final result. For the Celtics, Anthony Bishop hit three 3-pointers and had a total of nine points.

In the middle school championship game, the New Britain CSA Suns took on the Max Pizza Bobcats in a high scoring game. The Bobcats, coached by Jacob Willis, were victorious, 57-54. They were led by Jaekwon Spencer, who scored 28 points. Jekhi Walker added 11 points, including three 3-pointers. For the Suns, Daniel Kawnacki had a team high 16 points.

Before the season began, Matthew Scofield, League Coordinator, set out several goals for all of the players and coaches. This included meeting new friends, teaching the principals of sportsmanship, how to play as a team, and getting the kids together in an environment where they can have fun.

Games and practices began back in January and teams practiced once per week and played one game on the weekend. All of the players and coaches worked extremely hard over the past few months and despite only one team being able to win the championship in each division, the program goes much further beyond winning and losing.

Now that the season is over, Scofield is very pleased with the way it unfolded.

“I just want to thank all the officials, staff, coaches, players, and parents that made this season so successful. Every week I saw players get better fundamentally and also as a team,” he said. “I am really proud of the outcome at both levels in terms of kids getting better at the game of basketball and I hope it is a continual trend in the upcoming years. “

The Parks and Recreation Department would like to thank all team sponsors for the 2014 season for their support of the basketball program. The 2014 sponsors were: New Britain Suburban Women’s Club, Connecticut Central Labor Council, New Britain CSA, Max Pizza, Polish Falcons, Pizza Pal, Capitol Lunch, Blaze Barber Shop, Brittany Farms Health, Avery’s Beverages, and JC Special T.
