New Britain Junior Hurricanes
For several weeks, we have been reporting on the Junior Hurricanes Cheerleading and Football program. You may remember that their seventh grade team were crowned the New England Champions and their U8 cheerleading squad placed first in its age group at the New England Regionals.
Both groups of athletes just completed their respective competitions down in Florida and New Britain should be proud to call these young boys and girls our own. In their first football game in the American Youth Football National Championships, the 7th grade squad defeated the East Side Hawkeyes, 26-6. In their second game, they were defeated by the Marlboro Mustangs, 20-7. In the game to determine third place in the nation, they fell just short to the NJ Seminoles, 20 – 16. This means that the Junior Hurricanes 7th grade squad was crowned the fourth best team in the nation. The head coach of the team was Johnny Velez and was assisted by Jamel Hargraves, Khamphouth Soumpholphady, Robert Zapor, and Alex Morales.
The Junior Hurricanes U8 cheerleading squad did just as well as the boys and finished in the top five at the national level in their division. They competed on December 15 against several other teams. Previously, the squad had placed first in the MIDCONN, State, and Regional championships. The head coach of the squad was Tamika Humphrey and was assisted by Kiara Humphrey, Maria Morales, and Crystal Cancel. The team parent is Nicole Nauss.
