Do You Have the Most Important Card in Your Wallet?

September is National Library Card Month – the month that celebrates library cards and their benefits. In the last couple of years, at New Britain Public Library, we have seen a wonderful increase of cardholders. Let’s keep that number growing.

In celebration of National Library Card Month, we are giving a free library book bag to every person who gets a new card. Already have a card? Bring someone in to get a new library card and get a free book bag. Have a card but can’t use it because of long over due, unreturned items? Bring in these items and we will forgive the fines so you can use your card again.

Anyone can get a free card. The one requirement is that you get one it from the library in the city that you reside in. After that you can use it at any public library in Connecticut.

Why get a card?

Save money. Why buy, when you can borrow books, e-books, DVDs, books on CDs, and magazines or use library computers to get on line. Or try that music CD or new author out by borrowing before you buy.

Use your card to check out databases we subscribe to, online, from home to – study for your GED, citizenship test, SAT, or improve your math, reading and writing skills or search for jobs, colleges or financial aid.

Borrow from a variety of museum passes to get discounts on entrance fees, including State Parks.

Check out e-books from home.

Borrow materials from any Connecticut public libraries (Connecticard service). And if you can’t get there, we will have the item delivered here for you and as well as get it back to the library through the Connecticar program.

Even if you don’t have a card, there are still many in library services that you can use. Hook up to the Internet with your device on our free Wi-Fi service. Check out your family tree with Ancestry database. Read magazines and newspapers in the library. Attend programs, something for all ages, or take a computer class. Join in on one of our book discussions.

Check out our large format scanner. Scan articles, documents, photos and email or save to your flash drive. Copy and fax machines are available.

Read the New Britain Herald on microfilm all the way back to 1915.

For middle and high school students, we have a Homework Center, to help with class work or homework. Improve those grades.

And check out our Jefferson Branch in Jefferson Elementary School on Horseplain Road which offers many of the same services.

We know how important a library card is – that’s why we want to make sure everyone has one.
