How to Stay Cool

Next heat wave we have – think library! We are the one of the original Cooling Centers but are often forgotten as such. After all, our doors are open to absolutely everyone. You don’t need to purchase anything to spend time here. We open at 9 am and are open four nights, Monday – Thursday until 9 p.m., and Fridays until 5 p.m. You can stay as long as you like. We even provide things for you to do – for free! Sit in a comfortable chair and read a book, magazine or newspaper from our great selection. Bring your laptop, smart phone or tablet and hook up to our WIFI. Listen to music, a Book on CD on your laptop or CD player. Watch a movie on your laptop. Use one of our computers to browse the Internet, work with Microsoft Office, catch up on your email or try out the many databases we have. Learn about the Learning Express database with its great selection of practice tests. You can find information about the naturalization process and practice for the Citizenship test. Practice for the GED, SAT or PSAT. Improve your math, writing, or reading skills – for both kids and adults. Or browse the Salem History or Science databases or the World News Digest. The new Career Cruising database provides career and college information. Compare colleges and find out about financial assistance. Look for jobs with JobNow. Prepare your resume with help. Search your family tree with the Ancestry database. Visit our Local History Room and learn about New Britain. Check to see if there’s a program going on. And if you can’t get to the Main Library on High Street, visit our Jefferson Branch at 140 Horseplain Road, near Slater Road. They are open Monday – Tuesday, 9 am to 6 pm, Wednesday. – Thursday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Fri. 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Please help us spread the word. There are many out there who don’t have air conditioning. Word of mouth is one of the best ways of advertising. What better way, than sharing the great offerings at the library in your conversations with others. So please keep up the good work that you do, talking up the library, and help people beat the heat. Take a break from your crazy day too. Everyone is invited for a short daycation at the library to relax and stay cool.
