Substance –Free Family Day and Car Show Coming Soon

It’s almost here! Saturday, September 17th marks the date for New Britain’s Substance-Free Family Day, the community’s celebration of an alcohol and drug-free lifestyle, and the New Britain Car Show, the City’s largest downtown auto demonstration!

Since early April the Substance-Free Family Day committee and the Downtown District have planned and worked diligently to bring more activities and agency participation to make this year’s event one of the best ever. This will be the 14th year of Substance-Free Family Day (or Family Day for short), and the New Britain’s 5th annual Car Show. There will be exciting activities, fabulous entertainment, tasty food, informational booths and tables, interesting demonstrations and more! Plus, this year, for the very first time there will be a reciprocal benefit for all who attend both Family Day and the Car Show. Staff at both events will be giving away vouchers for food and other incentives to go to both events. The New Britain Car show is from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. and Family Day is from 12 noon until 5 p.m., so families will have plenty of time to attend both events!

Family Day, located at Walnut Hill Park, will have many local health, educational, and service agency booths coupled with activities and demonstrations such as the Parks and Recreation inflatables, State Police “Convincer”, NBPD Dare car, Dept. of Corrections prisoner transport bus, New Britain Youth Museum/Hungerford animal displays, and more. In addition, there will be a magician, clowns, face painting, balloon animals, tae kwon do demonstrations and other activities throughout the day. Entertainment will be provided by “Two Piece Suit”, an upbeat rock and pop music band. There is no charge for entertainment, but a minimal fee will be charged to take part in activities, purchase food and beverages. Most of the cost of the event is subsidized by a grant from the Connecticut State Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services through the Substance Abuse Action Council of Central Connecticut.

The New Britain Car Show, located in the downtown area of New Britain at Main St, West Main St. and Chestnut Street, will have an all inclusive display of muscle cars, street rods, antiques, Northeast Utilities’ Electric Car, New Britain High School’s Solar Car & Bio-Fuel Car, CT Transit’s Hybrid Bus & Fuel Cell Bus and other display autos. In addition there will be restaurant participation, vendors, food booths, and a “DJ” with top hits. The event is sponsored by the New Britain Downtown District and is free.

Event planners will be issuing press releases for both events with more details shortly; but for now plan on being at New Britain’s Walnut Hill Park and downtown New Britain on Saturday September 17 (rain date September 18) for two fabulous events with fun for the whole family!
