Main Street USA Schedule Set for Sept. 8
The summer is going by quickly and Main Street U.S.A. is only a few weeks away.
This year’s annual event has been set for Sept. 8 from noon to 9 p.m. at Walnut Hill Park.
Each year the event grows as thousands come out to enjoy the day filled with a variety of cultural foods, adult beer and wine garden, craft and vendor booths, a “kids zone” with rides and amusement activities, helicopter rides, walk-around performers, stages with community performances, children’s entertainment, headlining musical acts, and a fireworks show to end the night!.
The City considers the event a celebration of New Britain’s melting pot of cultures.
“Main Street USA has been a beloved New Britain event for decades—it’s a fun-filled day for the family full of good food, music, entertainment and most importantly, community. It’s an opportunity to celebrate the rich diversity and heritage of our City and a chance to show visitors all that we have to offer. When we brought the festival back in 2015, after a 15 year hiatus, our Parks and Rec Department made a commitment to making the event bigger and better each year,” stated Mayor Erin E. Stewart. Mayor Stewart went on to say “We hope to have it back downtown someday, but that won’t happen until all of our streetscape work is completed!”
The event will feature entertainment on three stages.
A welcome stage, located at the north end of the park, will welcome guests who have used the shuttle bus throughout the day. Smaller stage acts, such as Acoustic Mashpit, Whiskey, Wine, and Coke, and Caribbean Vibe will fill the air with musical entertainment.
A “kids zone” will engage kids between noon to 7 p.m. Wristbands will be sold for $10, or a family four-pack for $30, which will allow kids unlimited use of inflatable moonbounces, corn maze, climbing wall, a 45’ ferris wheel, a 100’ slide, a carousel, walk-around clowning and magicians, and more.
This year the Kids Zone Stage will have more of a family focus with performances to engage young and old. The stage, located adjacent to the Kids Zone amusements, will feature the Amazing Andy’s magic show at 1 p.m.; a performance by Moana at 2 p.m.; entertainment by T-Bone at 3 p.m.; an animal demonstration by Curious Creatures at 4 p.m.; and a comedy magic circus show with Sammie and Tudie at 5 p.m.
One of the highlights of the event is the adult entertainment.
The main stage, located at the Darius Miller Memorial Bandshell, will host a variety of live bands throughout the day. The schedule will feature the Sharades at 1 p.m.; NeoSound at 3 p.m.; Last Licks at 5 p.m.; and Dr. K’s Motown Revue at 7 p.m.
A beer garden will be open from noon to 9 p.m. for guests 21 and over. A valid ID will enable admittance into the tented area where beer and wine will be available for purchase.
Helicopter rides, over New Britain, will be offered for $20 per rider starting at 1 p.m. and running through 6 p.m. Limited rides will be offered during these time. It is suggested that you arrive early to be sure to get a spot.
If you get hungry during the event, there will be a variety of food vendors behind the band shell on the interior loop on the park. They will sell popular fair foods and beverages. Further down the road will be arts and crafts vendors, corporate vendors, and civic groups who will sell their goods or promote their services.
The event will conclude with a fireworks display at 8:45 p.m. The show will be displayed from the highest point of the park and will illuminate the sky. Great viewing locations throughout the park include the band shell area and the open space within the walking loop of Walnut Hill.
Free parking will be offered at the Badolato parking garage at 25 Washington Street. Shuttle busses will pick-up and bring visitors to and from the event beginning at 11:45 a.m. Parking will not be available at Walnut Hill Park for this event.
In addition to the City of New Britain, generous sponsors include: FIA (Fiduciary Investment Advisors), Fireworks Sponsor; and Downes Construction Company, Beer Garden Sponsor. The city thanks them for helping to make this event successful.
