Special Library Events
Need a passport? The cost of passports is going up on April 2 for first time applications or lost or stolen passports. Let your library save you money. On Saturday, March 24, you can get a new passport or renew your passport at the library. The United States Postal Service will be at the library, 10 am to 1 pm, to accept applications for new and renewed passports. Bring a passport compliant photo or have one taken. For details check out the library’s Facebook page or call the Information Desk. They can tell you what you will need to apply for a passport, the cost and methods of payment. You should have your passport in 4-6 weeks.
Throughout the month of April, there’s a different passport program at the library. We are again participating in Connecticut Library Association’s Passports to Connecticut Libraries. Stop by to pick up a library passport. Visit at least 5 of the participating libraries, get your library passport stamped each time and receive a free token gift. Turn in your passport to a participating library by May 7 for a chance to win a $150 Visa gift card in the statewide drawing. Four winners will be selected: one adult (18 and older) and one child from a random drawing from all who visited at least five libraries, and one adult and one child from a drawing from all who visited the most libraries. It’s a great opportunity to see the many wonderful libraries Connecticut has.
Then get ready for the first ever book sale dedicated to children and teen books in April. Catch the enthusiasm of the Friends of the Library. They have received an amazing number of children’s books. It will be held on Friday, April 20 from 2 – 4 pm and Saturday, April 21 from 10 am – 4 pm in the Community Room of the library. Bring the kids because there will be crafts and other activities for them. The offerings are incredible – board books to young adult books; books in other languages; comic books and graphic novels; series books such as Harry Potter and the Twilight series; music books and DVDs. By supporting the Friends, you are supporting the library. Every penny goes to the library! During March, you can catch a sneak preview in the front display case at the library for a sample of the offerings. And while you are at it, think about becoming a Friend of the Library. New members are welcome! A membership form can be found at nbpl.info along with information about the Friends.
