Reis Selected Assistant Coach on MCDonald’s East Team

Kurt Reis, New Britain High School Boys Basketball Coach, has been selected to be an assistant coach on the East Team in the 41st McDonald’s All-American All-Star Game, which will be held on March 28 at the Philips Arena in Atlanta.

The McDonald’s All-American All-Star Game features the best and most highly recruited high school boys basketball players who are set to graduate in 2018. Each roster is composed of 12 players for a total of 24. These players are selected from 2,500 nominees by a committee of basketball experts and are chosen not only for their on-court skills, but for their performances off the court as well.

John Mirabello of Northwest Catholic High School will be the head coach of the East Team. He asked Reis, a former player of his, to be a part of his staff following one of New Britain’s recent basketball games. Northwest Catholic’s JV coach, Karl Herbert, will also be an assistant coach.

“When Coach asked me, there was no hesitation. I told him to count me in,” Reis said. “It’s an honor to be a part of this event and it will be the first time I get to coach with those two, which will be exciting. To coach with them and to coach 12 of the country’s best high school players will be an experience I will never forget.”

Three of the twelve players on the East Team are ranked in the top five throughout the country. R.J. Barrett and Zion Williamson, ranked number 1 and 2 by ESPN, respectively, have both committed to Duke for the upcoming school year. Romeo Langford, ranked number 5 in the country, has not yet committed to a school.

Len Corto, CSDNB Athletic Director, said having the chance to coach players of this caliber is an experience that will pay dividends for both Reis and the student-athletes at New Britain High School.

“This is an outstanding opportunity for Coach Kurt Reis,” said Corto. “It’s a huge honor for him and the opportunity to coach the best high school players in the country will be an outstanding experience. He’ll be able to put some extra tools in his coaching toolbox and bring that back to New Britain.”

Joseph Pinchera, Principal of New Britain High School, echoed Corto and extended his congratulations to Reis for this once in a lifetime opportunity.

“We are pleased and honored that coach Reis has been selected to be an assistant coach in the McDonald’s AllAmerican All-Star Game in Atlanta,” said Pinchera. “This is an amazing opportunity for our coach to work with the nation’s best high school basketball players and to represent New Britain on a national stage.”
