New Britain City Journal

New Britain's Weekly Online Newspaper

Editor’s Note 1/25/2018

Last week’s planned meeting on the debt that never occurred has sparked quite a bit of controversy across the City. I wrote a little bit about it on page 4, but I have much more to say about it.

This is all more party politics from both sides.

First, it is not right to cancel a meeting an hour before it is to be held. There is no reason members of the Democratic party could not have come and listened to the speakers to learn more on the issue. If they weren’t ready to vote then they should have tabled it again or voted no.

That being said, since the Democrats weren’t there why did the Republicans still try to hold the meeting? It made no sense.

Both sides should have done better for our constituents.

Debt consolidation is an important issue. I hope the Democratic Council can find a better way to fix our debt than debt restructuring. If not, they need to pass the plan. This issue is difficult, but it is not rocket science. The City is in debt and cannot pay its bills in the next few years.

This was not created by Mayor Erin Stewart. She is trying to fix the problem.

The Council needs to stop playing party politics and put New Britain residents first. Stop the name calling and game playing.

I hoped, as did many, that the Democratic Council majority would not play games. I am frustrated as it appears the next two years are going to be difficult. It has been a game of point and counterpoint between the two parties.

I am imploring both sides to stop this nonsense. This is not about who is right and who is wrong. Do your jobs. You were elected by the people. Put them first.

The next meeting on debt restructuring has been planned for Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at City Hall. Hopefully it will not be canceled.

I will continue to watch this issue and call out both political parties. New Britain deserves better.
