Editor’s Note 5/27/2011

On Monday at 6 p.m. is the Memorial Day Parade. This year I would love to see the attendance high. I was there last year and was disappointed. As a youngster in New Britain the Memorial Day Parade was one of the highlights of the year. It is good, clean fun and features music from such bands as our own New Britain High School Marching Band. This year it is more...

NBCJ to Offer Mayoral Views

Another hat has been thrown into the ring this week. Former New Britain Mayor Lucian Pawlak has announced he wants to be the next mayor. Now we have three Democrats in Tim O’Brien, Paul Catanzaro and Pawlak. If we ever get a Republican, we will have at least four. That will make for a great political season. Opposing views mean residents can really see the more...

Prepare with Family as you get Older

Dear Les Is More: A few weeks ago my friend’s father had to go to the hospital. My friend went to his home (he is a widower) to pick up a few things. The place, although clean was disorganized with paper all over the dining room table. It seemed paper was everywhere and you could hardly step around it without knocking something down. I’m turning 60 next year, (my more...

Thank You for a Great Year

When we started the first edition of the New Britain City Journal one year ago, we encountered a lot of naysayers. A lot of people did not think a weekly newspaper could succeed in New Britain. There was plenty of reasons to be skeptical. We had a lot to prove. And, we are glad to have proved them wrong. This edition marks our one year anniversary. It has been a more...

It seems budget cuts cannot be avoided as the main topic of conversation this week. Both the school board and the City are facing major cuts. Page 1 is filled with news about the cuts. On Monday night the board of education used a two percent set aside available from the state to save all day kindergarten. On Tuesday, school board and common council members met to more...

Oktoberfest Important for City

Many residents say there isn’t anything to do in New Britain. This September, Oktoberfest will change that for at least one weekend. This event, under the guidance of Nick Augustino and Avner Krohn, as part of their organization Plan So Grand, is an event that could put the City in the spotlight. Hopes are for 30,000-50,000 people from across the state to attend. more...

I am really excited about two events this week - the announcement of the details of Oktoberfest and the chance for the City to get $10,000 for fireworks. Read both stories on page 1. If you want to help insure there are fireworks this year, please enter the contest. We will have a link to it on our website at www.nbcityjournal.com. I am hoping residents make a real more...

Wanted: Good Mayor for New Britain

As Mayor Timothy Stewart made the long awaited announcement that he would not run for re-election Tuesday night, City residents can only wait to see in what direction our future will go. We will have a number of options. Already two (Democrats Tim O’Brien and Paul Catanzaro) have - and possibly a third candidate (Republican Mark Bernacki) may - throw their hat in the more...
