I often talk about seeing a turnaround in New Britain. In the last few months it seems much has happened. Last year Mofongo opened and changed that corner. It is immensely popular. This week a grand opening ribbon cutting ceremony happened for The Kitchen. It is owned by Mofongo owner Vincent Placeres. Hopes are he can bring the same success to that restaurant, in the more...

I apologize to those who have been looking for the City Journal the last two weeks. I had to travel out of state to finish some of my mom’s business. Hopefully, that is completed. A lot happened while I was gone. I could not recap everything. I would need more ads for a larger paper to do that. I was surprised and yes disappointed to see Mayor Erin Stewart run for more...

I do not know how the public feels, but the power struggle coming from the Common Council is an outrage. This week they set a resolution for a hiring freeze. Although I am in favor of a hiring freeze, the Democratic led Council has no right, according to charter, to make this resolution. This appears to be an attempt to take control away from Mayor Erin more...

HUD Makes Reverse Mortgages Less Attractive

The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has made changes to the federal reverse mortgage program. Citing the need to put the program on better financial footing, HUD has raised reverse mortgage fees for some borrowers and lowered the amount homeowners can borrow. The changes took effect on October 2, 2017. They affect borrowers who take out new loans, but more...

Super Powered Friends of the Library

Those incredible Friends of the New Britain Public Library did it again with their amazing super powers of book sale success. This very dedicated group of volunteers filled the Community Room with children’s books, replenished stock and sold books for two days. With an abundance of donated children’s books, there is not enough room to put them all out in the more...

As I write this it is pouring rain outside. I guess April brings rain, but it would be nice if Spring decided to show up. Snow and sleet are meant for February and not April. I could use some 70 degree weather. We have a new fire chief in Raul Ortiz. He seems like a fantastic man. I think he will be a good fit in New Britain. I wish him luck and much success. He is an more...

For those of you who do not know, my mother went to heaven on Tuesday morning. It has been a rough week for me. The wake will be next Tuesday evening from 4-7 p.m. at Shaker Funeral Home and the funeral on Wednesday morning at St Ann’s. The next few weeks, I will have a heavy heart so please bear with me. I will do my best as I was very close to my mother. So what more...

We Celebrate

We Celebrate

On Friday, June 25, 1999, the Reverend Robert J. Lysz was found murdered inside the Church he shepherded. In less than a week, on Thursday, July 1, 1999, the Mass of the Resurrection was celebrated. How could there be a celebration of any kind? We turn to the faith shared by Father Lysz and the many who knew him to find the answer. This faith does not celebrate the more...

With the cold weather we are having, it seems premature to write about potholes, but the warm weather will arrive. As it does the potholes in the City will grow in both number and size. Residents need to be aware of how to report them. This week the City announced SeeClickFix is ready as an app on your phone. See it, click and send it to be fixed. This idea will more...

Do not be surprised to hear more disparaging remarks about me and the paper in the next few weeks. Every few years people who do not like my opinions come out to smear me. It is part of the job.
