I did not write about it because it felt like old news, but in case you missed it, Mayor Erin Stewart was called to the White House last week. She met President Donald Trump and was involved in a round table discussion on investing in the Opportunity Act, proposed by a bipartisan coalition from Senate & Congress. It can funnel private dollars into our urban more...

I was speaking to someone this week who told me it was great that I speak my mind. They might not always agree, but give me credit for telling it the way I see it. My goal has always been to tell the public what I see. I really don’t have any reason to be partial on anything. I am not running for any office. I will continue to give you my views on what is more...

Not accepting a debt restructuring plan in January has cost the City an additional $1.9 million. Each day the City waits costs taxpayers more. I certainly hope a plan by the Democratic Council saves the money wasted by not approving the plan. I have always hoped another solution is found. I just hope it is found quickly. Playing politics is costing residents money. more...

Last week I implored both political parties to stop playing games. Apparently, my pleading made no headway as last Thursday’s meeting was more of the same. Democrats are fighting to prove a meeting was held illegally. That is fine. Do what you need to do. But, don’t ignore the debt restructuring. If you need more time then say it. Don’t put on a show at a Special more...
What Is The Library To You?
By Pat Rutkowski | New Britain Public Library Director at February 1, 2024 | 3:30 pm |
Last year when we sent out our annual appeal letter, we asked people “What would you do in a world without libraries?” It was a thought provoking question and when many stopped to ponder, it was unimaginable. There has always been a library. How could we imagine being without one? So if we can’t imagine not having a library; what is a library to you and why would more...

Last week’s planned meeting on the debt that never occurred has sparked quite a bit of controversy across the City. I wrote a little bit about it on page 4, but I have much more to say about it. This is all more party politics from both sides. First, it is not right to cancel a meeting an hour before it is to be held. There is no reason members of the Democratic more...

I went to see the movie “The Post” this week. It was very good. It really showed the importance of newspapers. Many people seem to forget the reasons newspapers exist. Today, with all the talk from the president about fake news, newspapers are being downgraded. That should never be the case. Newspapers work for the people and not the government. I recommend more...

It is nice to have warm weather after such cold temperatures. I was beginning to feel the need to just hibernate. If you feel that way, be sure to read our story on page 1 on the Winter Blues. For many of us it is just a slight depression of cold, dark weather. For many others it can turn into a deeper depression. If you want to stay away from the dark sadness it is more...

It is hard coming back from two weeks off. I want to thank readers for giving me a chance to take time off for the holidays. I went to Cancun for Christmas and had a great time. I hope your holiday was just as fun. I am back and ready to bring you the best news from the City. We will work hard this year to give you a different take on the City. It is always our more...
How Will the New Tax Law Affect You?
By Robert Scalise | Attorney at Law at January 4, 2024 | 3:30 pm |
While most of the new tax law – the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act – has to do with reducing the corporate tax rate from 35 percent to 21 percent, some provisions relate to individual taxpayers. Before we get into the details, be aware that almost everything listed below sunsets after 2025, with the tax structure reverting to its current form in 2026 unless Congress acts more...
