The New Britain Parks and Recreation Department will be offering a co-ed flag football league for students in middle school. This flag football league is set to be the only spring league in the city dedicated to football for New Britain’s youth.
The league is set to begin Saturday, April 2, 2024 at 10:00am. The Flag Football League will meet at Hungerford Park on Saturdays. Hungerford Park is the practice facility for New Britain High School Football and is located at 111 Farmington Avenue in Berlin. The League will kick off with a workshop for the first three days of the league. The workshop will consist of several drills and exercises conducted by league coaches. At the end of the third day, teams will be selected by coaches.
Following the workshop, games will be held every Saturday morning beginning at 10:00am. Each game will last approximately one hour. There will be a total of eight games throughout the season, set to end in mid-July. Following the regular season will be a single-elimination post season for the top four teams at the end of the season. The league championship will end the league with the winners of the play-off games facing each other. “This is a great way to get kids out and play a sport they love,” said Barbara Zakrzewski, Recreation Supervisor. “We find it very important to offer a wide variety of activities for residents to participate in throughout the year.”
All participants will be supplied with team shirts and flags. Cleats are allowed but are not required. The Parks and Recreation Department is also looking for coaches and officials for the league; anyone interested should contact Jerrell Hargraves, Program Coordinator at 860-612-5000 Ext. 638
