Driving to the Westfarms Mall many may see the Seoul Korean BBQ & Sushi at 593 Hartford Road in New Britain which opened in December. Those looking for a special fine dining experience are encouraged to stop in to this first authentic Korean BBQ restaurant in the state.

The restaurant, opened by Joseph Moon and Jimmy Kwan, specializes in Korean BBQ with dishes like Saeng Dungshim (rib-eye), Galbi (marinated beef short ribs) and Dak-Bulgogi (marinated chicken thighs). All the BBQ meats are marinated for 7 days.

Patrons can sit at the table and cook the meats themselves. Soup, a large variety of banchan (small side vegetables), rice and a Korean drink are all included in the meal.

“This is cook it yourself,” said Joseph Kang, who is the Godson of Moon and helps run the establishment. “It took six months to get approvals because of this.”

The restaurant is 6,500 square feet and about 180 people can be served.

“We recommend people get reservations on the weekend,” said Kang as it is packed. “You warm up the grill and then barbecue it right at your table.”

The restaurant has a fancy modern authentic Asian atmosphere. There are several private rooms and a spot for large screen televisions. Each table has a cooking area and large ventilation above it for the smoke.

“This kind of restaurant is popular in New York, New Jersey, Chicago, Los Angeles and other big cities,” said Kang. “Connecticut is not a big state, but right now a lot of people have a taste for Korean food. People around here had to previously go to New York City.”

Kwan owns three Korean restaurants in Denver, Colorado which have been very successful. This restaurant is based on that one.

“Mr. Kwan told Mr. Moon that he has a good Korean business in Denver and said to try this,” said Kang. “Mr. Moon has a liking for restaurants.”

Kang says he also owns Pretty Woman, in West Hartford and Springfield.
