The New Britain City Journal recently did a question and answer time with Tebucky Jones on what happened with his recent firing as NBHS football coach. These are his answers.
Q. How did you find out you were going to be fired?
A. I found out through a third party. Someone called my brother. And my brother warned me. Then I called the A.D. (Len Corto) to see if it was true and he confirmed it.
Q. Why did you resign?
A. When I asked him and he said ‘yes’, I thought being fired is embarrassing so I would rather resign than be fired. Then he told me not to do it because they are going back to talk to the superintendent tomorrow morning. Then when they went back I called him and he confirmed it. It was like ‘resign or you’re going to be fired’.
Q. Did anyone from New Britain Public Schools officially accept your resignation?
A. No. Not that I know of. I never heard from them or got anything. (He was notified after this interview)
Q. Why did you rescind your resignation?
A. I thought about and it felt like I was being bullied out of the position. I couldn’t think of any reason. I hadn’t done anything. There was no reason why. I looked at everything. I was the last one hired and was there the shortest time. Why would it be me?
Q. What is your relationship with Len Corto?
A. He was my coach in high school. When I was in high school and had no place to stay, I used to stay on his couch. They tried to use him.
Q. Why do you feel Carlos Piña Jr. is involved?
A. I have a text and I am pretty sure it is going around. It shows whatever he says, he is lying. That is proof in the pudding. I’m 100 percent sure it is him, because it is from one of my coaches. I got it right after I resigned.
The New Britain City Journal could not confirm the text was about Tebucky Jones and decided not to publish it.
Q. How many games did Superintendent Kelt Cooper attend to see what you did?
A. I saw him maybe at two. He has never been to a practice.
Q. How many evaluative meetings have you had in 3 years?
A. Zero. I was never told there were problems. I was never in Cooper’s office.
Q. Did this come out of the blue?
Yes. I did not know about it. People talked in town and I heard things like people have it out for me.
Q. Where do you go from here?
A. I expect to be coach and that is it. He (Cooper) never turned down my letter and it has to go to a board first. I don’t understand why the job is posted (in the Board of Education website).
Q. Any additional comments?
A. They are playing games. These games were played even when I was in high school.
