Elections 2013 – Board of Education – Nick Mercier (R)

My name is Nick Mercier and I’m running for the Board of Education in New Britain. My first experience in education was as a scout leader. I was often in charge of teaching younger scouts first aid, cooking, hiking, and other survival skills. I found early on that I had a strong knack for education. I made education my career, obtaining both a Bachelors and Masters degree in music education.

Throughout my career I’ve worked with children of all ages, from Pre-School to High School. I have had the opportunity to work in a wide variety of school districts as well, from rural farmland, to urban and suburban centers. I’ve experienced the nitty gritty of education; from creating detailed plans to help all children to navigating the changing landscape of teacher evaluation and standardized testing.

I have seen what policies work and what policies don’t. In addition to my own experiences, I have professional connections and contacts from around the state and the country, allowing me to draw on the experience of hundreds of educators nationwide.

New Britain needs a new vision for education. We need leaders who have solutions, not excuses. The past ten years have been full of excuses as to why it wasn’t the Board’s fault our schools were failing. We need leaders who will hold themselves accountable for the success of our schools. Our children deserves better. I hope that this November you will stand with me for a brighter future for all of our children.
