Taxes in the Mail

If you have not received one yet don’t be fooled, tax bills are on the way. And this year they are interesting.
Residents will see an increase in car taxes as the mill rate has increased about 8 mills over last year. New Britain’s mill rate is 44.12. Last year it was 36.63.
Property tax costs will be mixed. About 25 percent of homeowners will see an increase in property tax costs compared to last year. Many properties taxes will decrease and some will stay about the same. The decrease is due to revaluation causing values of homes to decrease and not from lower taxes.
Business taxes are also expected to rise compared to last year.
To calculate property tax, multiply the assessed value of the property by the mill rate and then divide by 1,000. For example, a property with an assessed value of $50,000 located in a municipality with a mill rate of 20 mills would have a property tax bill of $1,000 per year.
Mayor Tim O’Brien this year also includes a letter in the bills which claims he did not raise property taxes despite the fact that the mill rate rose and many people are paying more money.
“Certainly we still face difficult work and decisions because of the tough times. There should be no illusions that emerging from the deep national recession will take grit and hard work over a long time,” said O’Brien in the letter. “We will continue to face difficult challenges while we work to move our City forward.”
Also included is a message on economic development and use of the $237 million budget.
“While there are no perfect solutions to the challenges we face in the present, we must continue to make the investments to set ourselves on a course for a brighter future,” O’Brien said.
According to Tax Collector Cheryl Blogoslawski, bills went out Friday or Saturday and are due July 1.
“There is a 30 day grace period so everyone has until Aug. 1 to pay without penalty,” Blogoslawski said.
People can pay in the office at City Hall. Regular office hours are 8:15 a.m.-3:45 p.m. Monday through Friday and late night at 6:45 p.m. on the last Thursday of each month or residents can mail in payment.
Pay by phone is now available along with ability to pay on line at www.new-britain.net/liv_taxcoll.html. Credit Cards are accepted, but online only so a computer terminal is provided in lobby for customer use.
The July bill has two stubs for real estate that the second part is due in January.
Taxes should be mailed to the tax collector’s office, 27 West Main St. Room 204. If you want a receipt, send a self addressed stamped envelope.
If you have not received your tax bill by the end of next week, notify the city. Not receiving a bill does not mean you do not owe it. Failure to pay your taxes will result in a one and one-half percent interest penalty per month.
