The last 10 games have seen the Yankees go 6-4. I guess its better than .500, but not as good as it needs to be.
It’s tough playing on the west coast, but after this stint numbers need to improve. By the 4th of July I would like to see the Bombers back in first.
My dad used to tell me whoever was in first at the end of the day on July 4 would win the division. That is not necessarily true, but it is stuck in my head.
Yankee players did get a few honors this week. Brett Gardner was named American League Player of the Week and Robinson Cano was named Captain of the American League for the Home Run Derby.
Cano was captain last year too and did not hit well. He won it in 2011. Cano gets to choose three players to be with him on the team.
I think my choices would be easy. I like Jose Bautista, Miguel Cabrera and Chris Davis. Edwin Encarnacion is another good choice. Of course, these players have to want to be in it. Adam Dunn and Mark Trumbo would be good back-ups.
As captain, I doubt Cano will win again. It seems like there are too many responsibilities and pressure. He says his father will again pitch for him.
I wish him luck as long as it does not hurt his play with the Yanks. He is slumping and we need him.
Gardner has hit safely in 16 of his past 18 games. During that span, he is batting .365 with three home runs and 11 RBIs. Not bad for a guy known for is speed.
The bad news this week in the Yankee clubhouse continues to revolve around ARod. Should he be suspended 100 games for steroids? Any player who uses should know by now they are illegal and should be permanently suspended, Sorry ARod. We don’t need you.
The surprise Yankee in this mess is Francisco Cervelli. I would like to hear the catcher speak out on his accusations. If he used illegal drugs, it certainly didn’t help him enough. I kind of feel bad for him. His over enthusiasm on the field apparently extended to off the field. It could be the end of a sad career.
I don’t know what it is going to take to teach players not to use steroids, but the league has to keep suspending players. No one is immune.
