Summer’s here and the time is right for entering New England’s most prominent men’s basketball tournament, the Osgood Shootout.

The Osgood Shootout is the brainchild of Darwin Shaw, master promoter, motivational speaker, exceptional teacher, All-American track star, superb New Britain High coach and baker of the most exquisite Sweet Potato Pie that’s ever graced a New England Thanksgiving table.

The Shootout has attracted some of the finest basketball talent the state has ever seen to the city.

Former Providence College and NBA forward Ryan Gomes usually puts together a formidable group from the basketball-rich city of Waterbury. Ex-UConn magician and budding NBA star guard Kemba Walker has been a common sight at the Shootout, as has been other Husky notables like Jerome Dyson and Andre Drummond.

If you have a team that you think has that type of game, now’s the time to get your boys together.

The Shootout is currently accepting applications for play in the 2013 event, which will take place at New Britain High School’s Chick Shea Gymnasium Saturday, August 17 and Sunday, August 18.

A berth in the Open Division goes for $230. Scholastic coaches can jump-start their 2013-14 seasons by entering the High School Division for $150. Both tournaments are single elimination.

Shaw said spots in both tournaments go fast and stressed the importance of registering early. He can be reached via email ([email protected]) or phone 860-225-5110.

This summer marks the 21st year for the tournament.
