Mayor Steals Downtown Halloween

Last year the New Britain City Journal sponsored the first ever Halloween Safe Zone event in downtown New Britain. We helped to raise all necessary funds so residents would not have to pay a dime for a great Halloween celebration. About 5,000 residents showed up to one of the most successful City events in years.
As this is an election year, Mayor Tim O’Brien has decided the City will now take over the event costing the City residents money, and promoting himself in the process.
This event was not the City’s in the first place and it had no right taking it over.
The New Britain City Journal was invited to sit on the committee. Have you ever been invited to your own party? Our answer was obvious.
Residents should be outraged by Mayor O’Brien’s actions. He is stealing an event because number one, it is an election year and number two, because this newspaper has spoken out against him.
And he has threatened or bullied everyone involved in the event last year to be part of his committee.
Shame on you and your administration Mr. O’Brien. This mayor continues to disgrace residents and cost us money.
This event will now be funded by taxpayers and use parks and recreation staff and materials. Neither were needed last year.
The parks and recreation already holds its own Halloween event in Halloween Spooktacular. The event is held at Walnut Hill Park the Saturday before Halloween. And it is very successful. Thousands of children and families show up.
This second event done by the City is unnecessary. It is a slap in the face to this paper and residents.
This hasn’t stopped this paper from making holiday plans. More will be revealed in the future. We continue to think of good ideas the mayor’s office obviously cannot think of and we will continue to do them for the good of the City.
This paper’s only goal is to help the City. We have no intentions of being elected to any position. The Halloween event was not political before this takeover.
Once again this Mayor has proved it is all about him. He does not care if it uses tax money or whose idea it was. He wants it because it is close to election time and he will do whatever he has to in order to steal it from under this newspaper.
Yes, he is a bully. Residents need to show their displeasure with his actions. And at the least, remember it come November.
