HALS Academy sixth grader, Jamie Kelly, has won the KidsCAN Avoid Tobacco/Education Connection anti-tobacco billboard contest. As the winner of the local contest, held in New Britain and Danbury, Jamie’s artwork is now bigger than life and featured on a Whiting Street billboard.
The billboard, which will be up for two weeks, shows a family, with the slogan, “Tobacco free is better for you and me!”
Jamie said she was surprised her artwork was selected. She said it is an important message to get out.
“Tobacco’s not good for you, and people should know that,” she said.
Jamie said she wanted to draw a family because parents who smoke should know that they are creating an unhealthy situation for their children.
As part of her award, Jamie received a miniature billboard depicting her artwork from Lamar, the company which offered its billboard for the contest.
KidsCAN is funded by the Department of Public Health through a two-year grant, which ends in March 2013.
