Parents Urged to Register Students for School

The new Central Registration office for the Consolidated School District of New Britain has successfully registered hundreds of students who are new to the district this year. Parents are urged to register their children for school now, rather than waiting till school starts in September.

Central Registration, located to the rear of the Louis P. Slade Middle School at 183 Steele St., opened in the spring as a way to streamline the school registration process. The office provides a convenience to families registering more than one child, saving them multiple trips to various schools in the city. It serves as a one-stop site for registering children in grades kindergarten through 8. High school registrations will continue to be done at the high school, 110 Mill St.

Center registration provides on-site assessment of students in need of bilingual services, an on-site nurse to review medical records, staff to assess special education needs and translation services for parents who speak Spanish, Polish or Arabic.

After April 1, 2012, 118 students registered for the remainder of the 2011-2012 school year via the Central Registration office. Nearly 850 kindergarteners have registered for 2012-2013, and 83 grade 1-8 students have registered for 2012-2013. Nearly 100 additional student registrations are pending while they await documentation.

Central Registration is open Monday through Thursday, from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. This Friday, August 17, the office closes at noon. Next Friday, August 24, the office is open until 3 p.m.

Documents needed include a birth certificate, proof of residence in New Britain (utility bill or current lease) and Social Security number (optional). Medical records must reflect an exam after 8/1/11 for kindergarten, and most recent exam for grades 1-8. Sixth-grade students need updated medical exam and immunizations to enter grade 6. A census form, pre-K experience form for kindergarten registrations, emergency form, free and reduced lunch application and a release of records for students entering New Britain in grades 1-8 must all be completed.
