The New Britain Museum of American Art will hold its monthly First Friday on Aug. 3 from 5:30 to 8 p.m. This month we are featuring saxophonist Norman Gage, who will be accompanied by trumpeter Kenny Reed, pianist Warren Byrd, bassist Alex Tremblay, and drummer Jay Williams. Gage became a seasoned jazz musician by playing in pit orchestras in the Hartford area and music venues like Black-eyed Sally’s and Paul Brown’s Monday Night Bushnell Park Series. Gage also led a successful 13-piece jazz band in the 1980s. The quintet will fill the Museum with contemporary jazz, join us and cut a rug!
Food Tastings: Cavos Tavern and Pizzaria, Joey Garlic’s, and Relic Brewing Company
Cavos Tavern &Pizzaria will be bringing the traditional Greek dish spanakopita, a refreshing dish of spinach and leeks, lightened with dill seasoned with feta in an airy phyllo dough. Enjoy it with Cavos’ hummus and potato-garlic skordalia. Complementing the Greek fare, is traditional Italian penne and meatballs in a hearty tomato sauce made by Joey Garlic’s. Wash it down with a tasting of Plainville’s newest brewery, Relic Brewery Company, who will be providing an array of seasonal ales and lagers.
Trunk Show: Les Lourigan
Les Lourigan will be providing unique artistic expressions as part of this First Friday’s trunk show. Lourigan’s pieces are known for their whimsy appeal and aesthetic. He intends for people to find simple enjoyment in his work.
Opening Reception: Pixelated: The Art of Digital Illustration
Spanning generations from the most seasoned illustrators with over three decades of experience to some of the youngest and newest names in the field,Pixelated presents 26 illustrations by some of the most widely recognized and awarded illustrators working today. Remarks at 6 p.m. from curator Scott Bakal, an accomplished illustrator and professor at the Massachusetts College of Art and Design, his talk will open a window into the world of the modern illustrator and the tools and techniques that have transformed the face of illustration in the 21st century.

First Friday is $5 for Members, $10 for non-Members, $3 for beer and wine, soda is free.
