Schools Headed in New Direction

With the new plan unveiled Monday night by new Superintendent Kelt Cooper, New Britain schools are headed in a new direction. Well, kind of. In a way, they are headed back to an old direction.
Cooper wants to go back to neighborhood schools. Under Dr. Doris Kurtz as superintendent of schools, kids were shipped all over the City for specific needs. Cooper believes each school should be good enough to take care of their own students’ needs.
You can’t fight the success Cooper has achieved in Texas. He had been the superintendent of the lowest performing school district in Texas and the fourth poorest and he turned it into a recognized district in three to four years.
He has said his motto is “if it is worth doing at all, it’s worth doing exceptionally well.”
There is a tough task in New Britain as scores and many other factors have made it one of the poorest school districts in the state.
When asked during the interview process how Cooper planned to change that around, he said “How do you eat an elephant? A little bite at a time.”
Whether you agree with Cooper’s strategy or not you must agree that the next few years will be exciting to watch.
The City itself is in a resurgence. A lot of new and exciting things are happening. If the school system can turn around it will be another sign that New Britain is well on its way to becoming a shining City.
Former residents constantly talk about the way New Britain used to be. Well, even though the school system is going back to the way many of us remember, I have news for you, New Britain will never be what it was again.
But, it can still be a City in which we can all be proud. The future is bright. If we just remember to take it one little bite at a time.
