Saturday will be a day of celebrating old memories and making new ones for the entire family at Miss Washington Diner’s big anniversary event.
Owner Dan Czako is calling it the 50th Anniversary Relaunch Memorial Day Extravaganza. It will take place in the parking lot where the diner is located, on 10 Washington St.
“Miss Washington Diner was the hot spot of activity in New Britain’s hey day,” said Czako. “It was open 24 hours a day and brings back a lot of good memories for people.”
Czako wants residents to relive those memories and make some new ones at the celebration.
The event will begin at 11 a.m. with Mayor Tim O’Brien performing the ribbon cutting. A two-man band will start performing oldies at noon. Games, food and raffles will take place. Admission is free, but a special for $10 includes a hamburger, hot dog, snow cone, chips, soda and 10 tickets for games or raffle prizes. Raffle prizes include baskets and gift certificates from local businesses. Tickets can also be purchased individually.
“We are offering good old classic American food and games,” said Czako.
Food will be cooked on a grill, but the diner will also be open for those who want to go inside.
Games include such greats as ring toss, bean bag tosses and knock down the cans. A clown will conduct face painting.
Parking for the event is free at the garage across the street and the celebration will occur rain or shine under a tent.
Miss Washington Diner was originally called The Terminal Diner in 1928. Fifty years ago it was given the name it has now. The old diner was built below this diner and that is why you find steps going into Miss Washington.
Czako, who is a Bristol native, purchased Miss Washington Diner in May of 2010.
Since then Czako has named a new menu with dishes made for New Britain residents. There is the Rock Cat. It is a burger, a jumbo hot dog & French fries. The Hurricane is a jumbo chili dog with onions.
Also, the Miss Washington Monument has become a classic. The enormous $25 burger has four 8-oz patties, 8 strips of bacon, American, Swiss, Cheddar and provolone cheese, four home made onion rings, A-1 sauce, lettuce, tomatoes, onions and pickles. If you finish it in 20 minutes it is free. No one has succeeded so far.
The Miss Washington Diner is open 7 days a week from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. For more information call 860-224-3772.
