Education Connection invites all youth and their families to a tobacco-free family fun event on Saturday, Nov. 12 from 2-3 p.m. at the New Britain Public Library. MAD SCIENCE will present the entertaining stage show BE TOBACCO FREE. This interactive and engaging performance focuses on the science behind tobacco. Audience members will be invited to participate throughout the show. A volunteer will come on stage to pump up a real healthy lung while the audience observes the contrast to a lung diseased by tobacco use. The show’s mad scientist will create tobacco slime and slime a volunteer to simulate the harmful effects of tobacco toxins. Using an educational and entertaining approach, MAD SCIENCE performers encourage kids to consider good and healthy choices and avoid initiation of tobacco use, including cigarettes, electronic cigarettes and chewing tobacco.
Guests are invited to stay after the show to visit the project’s Tobacco Education Table for lots of free educational giveaways. There will be prizes for Tobacco Free Earth Bingo and Tobacco Roulette. Family members can sign their community’s Tobacco-Free Home and Car Pledge and will learn ways to encourage others to sign the pledge. Everyone attending will receive a free activity book, package of crayons and goody bag to go with a juice box and snacks.
BE TOBACCO FREE coincides with the American Cancer Society’s 36th Annual Great American Smokeout. Tobacco use remains the single largest preventable cause of disease and premature death in the country. Despite the well publicized harmful effects of tobacco use, more than 46 million Americans still smoke. The annual Great American Smokeout challenges smokers to refrain from smoking for 24 hours. By doing so, smokers will be taking an important first step towards a healthier life.
This tobacco-free family fun event is sponsored by KidsCAN Avoid Tobacco, a program managed by Education Connection. Through grant funding by the Connecticut Department of Public Health, KidsCAN Avoid Tobacco seeks to provide innovative tobacco education, prevent initiation of tobacco use and promote healthy and tobacco-free choices throughout New Britain to youth ages 5-14 and their families. KidsCAN events, clubs, activities and programs are always 100 percent free of charge.
