Avery’s Introduces New Totally Gross Flavor “Zombie Brain Juice”

You may have heard of Dog Drool, Monster Mucus, Kitty Piddle, Swamp Juice, Bug Barf and Toxic Slim, but this year Avery’s has introduced two new flavors to its “Totally Gross” soda line.
About a month ago, the beverage company on Corbin Ave. introduced Fungal Fruit. In the next week it will begin making Zombie Brain Juice.
“We usually launch our Totally Gross sodas in threes,” said Rob Metz, owner of Avery’s. “We rushed with Fungal Fruit. Zombie Brain Juice we want to get going before Halloween and then there will be Grasshopper Guts.”
Zombie Brain Juice is strawberry-orange.
“We had quite a debate on whether Zombie Brain Juice should be green or red,” said Metz. “We did extensive market research and 70/30 percent wanted red/orange. Zombie blood is supposedly green, but they liked red better.”
Metz said Halloween is the most popular time for the Totally Gross sodas.
“They are good for parties, giving away as trick or treat gifts, and they are great hostess gifts for a Halloween party,” said Metz.
Avery’s comes out with new Totally Gross soda flavors every three years. Other flavors are made throughout the year. This year flavors include “So Long, Osama”, “Yellow Snow” and “Irene’s Hurricane Punch”.
“Yellow Snow commemorated our big winter here,” said Metz. “It all depends on what comes up. I’m sure for the presidential race we are going to have to come up with something.”
For the last presidential election Avery’s had Barrack O’Berry and John McCream sodas.
Private labels for various events and parties are made throughout the year.
Metz has owned the company for about 12 years. In 1904, Sherman Avery had a poultry farm on the 520 Corbin Ave. location. He began making sodas as a new trend. Since then, the New Britain operation has been going strong as it makes over 20,000 bottles a year.
Metz has been inventing new flavors besides its most popular ones, like Birch Beer and Cream, pretty much since he started.
Soon it will be time for Pumpkin Pie soda and then Elf Elixir and Jingle Juice will be made for the Christmas holiday.
