Editor’s Note 9-02-2024

Like a silly child I anxiously waited for Hurricane Irene last week. I stocked up on canned goods, bought enough bottled water for two months, purchased a wind-up radio, stacked up on a year supply of batteries and packed clothes for a month vacation away from home if needed.
All day long Saturday I watched CNN and the Weather Channel. I stayed awake as long as I could Saturday night. And then, of course I promptly slept during most of the storm. (Uggh!)
When I awoke around 8:30 a.m., I was disappointed not to see trees down in my neighborhood and still have electricity. I thought the storm was a dud.
But, at 10 a.m. I decided to venture out to see if anything exciting happened anywhere in New Britain and I was shocked. Enormous trees were down, wires were blowing in the wind and street lights were out all over town. At Stanley Quarter Park the 9th tee was flooded (although some brave or crazy individual was golfing on a neighboring hole).
Hurricane Irene had certainly arrived while I slept much like St. Nick did as I was a child. I wish I were awake to see the storm at 6 a.m., but either way it did much of what was predicted.
After viewing the damage, flooding and hearing tales of people without electricity I soon realized instead of being disappointed, I should be thankful. Many people out there suffered in various ways. Luckily, Hurricane Irene was not as strong as anticipated, but it was enough to cause considerable damage. You will notice the newspaper is filled with photographs taken throughout the course of Sunday.
We feel this storm warranted extensive coverage.
I do want to take a moment to tell you about big news for us. Starting next week, the New Britain City Journal will have a sports section called “The Sports Journal”. It is sponsored by Roma Sports Bar & Grill and will feature Sportswriter Ken Lipshez.
For a long time I have wanted a sports page and finally all the pieces came together. Lipshez is a well established sportswriter, covering sports in our great City for 15 years, with the New Britain Herald. We are lucky to have him working with us.
You can send in sports news and scores for “The Sports Journal” at [email protected].
Our website poll question “Are you in Favor of the proposed Busway Project from New Britain to Hartford ?” ended with over 54 percent voting “no”.
A new question will be up soon, so check it out at www.nbcityjournal.com.
My funny though this week found on Facebook is not ha-ha funny, but something to ponder.
“Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, and today is a gift. That’s why it’s called the present.”
I thought it was kind of nice.
Until next week avoid any hurricanes and keep reading YOUR #1 Weekly Newspaper!
