September is National Library Card month. Don’t have a library card? Celebrate this month with us and get one. It’s the smartest card that you can have. Let me give you some excellent reasons to have a card. Your job is to add the word “free” at the end of each sentence.

Borrow books, movies, music CDs, magazines, downloadable books and videos. Use our computers. Get on the Internet. Search your family tree on Ancestry.com. Study for the GED or citizenship test on the Leaning Express database. Take a computer class. Borrow a museum pass and get discount admissions at great places to visit in Connecticut. Look for jobs, prepare a resume and practice for an interview using JobNow database. Borrow a CD to learn a new language.

The best reason of all - $ave money by doing any or all of the above!!!

The next question we usually hear -what does a library card cost? It is free….no charge…not a dime….nada….wolny…nic ….libero…niente. The only requirement is that you must live in New Britain to get a card at New Britain Public Library. Be prepared and bring proof of your current address which is for our use only. This is a requirement of the statewide Connecticard Program, a program that allows you to use your library card at all the public libraries in Connecticut. Everyone only gets one library card and that must be in the town one resides in.

Of course, everyone is welcome at the library even if you don’t need a card to come in. In fact, you don’t need a card to read magazines, books or newspapers, use the WiFi at the library or to enjoy all the wonderful free programs we do here for adults and children

For instance – how about free dance lessons!? Starting on Aug. 30 at 7 p.m. in the Community Room, we will offer a three week series of lessons for adults with dance instructor, Adrienne Marie, thanks to funding from the Greater New Britain Arts Alliance and get a library card!
