I am really excited about two events this week - the announcement of the details of Oktoberfest and the chance for the City to get $10,000 for fireworks. Read both stories on page 1.

If you want to help insure there are fireworks this year, please enter the contest. We will have a link to it on our website at www.nbcityjournal.com. I am hoping residents make a real difference and we get to keep our Fourth of July celebration. In an effort to keep taxes down, the council may decide to cut the event. The decision has not yet been made. Show your support by entering the contest. It’s another way to show New Britain residents care.

We have changed the poll question on our website. It is “What event at Oktoberfest are you most looking forward to?” Please vote. I am very interested in seeing what event residents favor most.

The results of our last poll are in. The question was “What line item would you like to see money added to in the budget?” Results showed “none” won overwhelmingly with over 71 percent. The “board of education” was second with about 19 percent of the votes. Both “city employees” and “other” received about 4 percent of the votes. It is not a scientific pole, but I found it very interesting. I hope you had the chance to vote.

Did you know Gov. Dannel Malloy was in New Britain again last week? He visited with a Polish group and spoke about his budget. Read more on page 1.

Come4Fun is about to start again this year. This event hosts seniors at Willow Street Park. It’s a great way to meet people and there are a lot of events and games. There is also hot dogs and coffee. Read about it on page 2 and plan to stop by.

Get the facts about carbon monoxide on page 5. It can be deadly.

Our business feature this week was the opening of the Nutmeg State Federal Credit Union on page 8. It’s great to have new business in the City.

Have you started using your grill yet? I’ve used mine a few times. On page 11, we have some great recipes for hamburgers. These will really be special. Give a few recipes a try.

I found a few funny things on Facebook this week, but I’ll limit it to one thought.

Anyone in my age group will definitely find this one amusing.

”Kid to their dad as they watch TV: Dad tell me again what age you were when you had to walk across the room to shut the TV off?”

When I was a youngster, we asked dad how far he had to walk to school in the snow. Now, it’s about the TV. LOL!

Have a great week and enjoy reading YOUR #1 Free Weekly Newspaper!
