In 2003 New Britain resident Trinene Davis was very sick after going into cardiac arrest. Soon after that she became pregnant and worried that her daughter may not understand how much she truly loved her.
“I wanted to leave her a legacy to treasure if anything should happen to me,” said Davis. “It was just words placed on my heart.”
So Davis began writing a book based on her daughter six-year-old Pucca, who goes to Vance Village School, called, “My Sunny Day.” It is self-published and illustrated and printed by Rosedog Books.
“Looking outside the window, she is thinking and imagining and dreaming about the fun things that she can do on a beautiful sunny day,” said Davis.
Should she go to the zoo, the park, walk, go to the store, visit a beach or get ice cream?
“In the end she had a choice to make and she actually chose none of them,” said Davis. “She just chose to stay home to enjoy her beautiful sunny day and play with her cousin Tarae.”
The irony of that story is Tarae passed away in Sept. 2010 at age 10.
“I was worried about me passing away and trying to leave my daughter a legacy and my niece died of brain cancer,” said Davis. “That brings me into my next book ‘The Butterfly in Me’.”
It will come out in October. That book is Davis watching her daughter trying to understand how someone so close to her can pass away. It deals with the loneliness and sadness.
“The butterfly appears and takes Pucca on an understanding that Tarae never left. She will be right there inside her,” said Davis. “I never saw any children’s book that talks about the significance of passing away.”
On Saturday, Davis will host, “My Sunny Day at the Carousel” at the carousel at Bushnell Park in Hartford. It is from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. It will feature free carousel rides from 12:30- 1 p.m.; facepainting; balloon art; zumba class; and a reading and book signing.
“A carousel is a perfect venue to have a children’s event,” said Davis. “It has some of the things that are inside the book.”
A portion of the proceeds from the event will benefit the Make a Wish Foundation and the Prayers from Maria Cancer Glioma Foundation.
Davis is a retired youth services officer. She formerly worked at the Connecticut Juvenile Training School, member of the board of the City of New Britain School Readiness Program and the Parent Advisory Committee of the YMCA.
