If you’re looking to shop for special occasion dresses such as proms, weddings and Sweet 16 there is no need to look outside of New Britain. Las Caribbenas, 417 Main St., holds all you need.
The cute little salon was opened in 2005 by Santa Mora. Mora had worked at other stores and decided to open one of her own. A hair stylist, she opened a unisex salon in the 2,000 square foot building. Customers came via word of mouth and some TV advertisements on Telemundo. So, Mora expanded to include dresses, jewelry, shoes and hair products.
“Walking into Las Caribbenas is like walking into your home,” said Mora. “There is a comfortable seating area with television. Coffee and tea is available during your visit to our salon.”
The salon area offers a variety of services including haircuts, scalp massage, hair coloring, highlighting, make-over, waxing, relaxers and facial waxing. There are six chairs and a professionally trained staff waiting to serve you. You can make an appointment or walk-in if you don’t mind a short wait.
The salon also offers a special miracle treatment keratin which conditions and texturizes overly frizzy hair.
According to Mora, it softens shines and restores hair to make it more manageable and easy to blow dry.
“We are the only salon in the state that offers that formula,” she said.
The dress area of the store holds a variety of dresses in different styles including plus sizes. There are also confirmation and baptism dresses as well as catalogs for special dresses. It takes about two weeks for catalog dresses to come in. A special person for fitting is available.
“We have a good variety and lot in stock,” said Mora. “There are a lot of dresses good for a night out.”
Las Caribbenas, which means “the Caribbeans”, also believes in helping out the community.
”We have given back to such groups as the New Britain Pentecostal Church and the Puerto Rican Society,” said Mora. “We are glad to consider any organization for sponsorship.”
High school graduates have trained at the salon and worked for Las Caribbenas.
“It’s part of the community services we do,” Mora added.
This weekend the store is holding a pampering basket raffle for Mother’s Day. Just get a hair service or make a purchase and register.
“We look forward to the first visit and want to offer something special,” said Mora.
Any first time customer bringing in this article or the Las Caribbenas ad from this paper gets a free haircut or protein treatment.
After one visit Mora believes you will like the salon.
“It’s a family environment,” said Mercedes Ortiz, stylist. “We’ve gotten to know each other for a long time and get along great.”
Other stylist’s include Moises Marcus and Natalie Mora and there is an assistant Tanya.
Las Caribbenas is open Mondays through Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sundays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
