‘Tis the season for Annual Holiday Bazaars. Crafters at the New Britain Senior Center are preparing a number of goods for all to purchase on Friday, Dec. 8.

“We make most of the stuff, but some people who are cleaning out their houses give us some trinkets,” said Shirley Hiser. “We make knitted hats, potholders, children pillows with books and mitten sets. If we don’t sell the mittens we will give them to those that need them. We have some very talented people. We have lovely items.”

“My stocking is all hand embroidered. Then I sewed the backing and hand stitched it,” added Ellie Roether. “It took a long time to do that. I am doing more embroidery.”

Lois Engblom made quilts and mitten sets.

The Annual Holiday Bazaar is from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The crafty seniors have been making items for the entire year.

“We have about 150 people show up at the bazaar,” said Nancy Cleveland who makes a wreath out of shells every year. “It has a lot of color this year. I love doing it. I almost burnt my finger off this year.”

The shell wreath sells out fast so come early.

Handmade ornaments like hats and lanterns are made by Nancy Durkin.

The bazaar has been going on for at at least 30 years.

The Craft Group meets in the Hen House of the Senior Center every Tuesday and Thursday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. They break for coffee at 1:30 p.m. Members do not have to be there everyday, but can come as desired.

“We have a lot of fun,” added Hiser. “People should be sure to come.”

The Holiday Bazaar also includes a baked good table sale, raffle prizes, lunch (for purchase), music and more!

“Come on down next Friday. We will have apple pie, meatball grinders and stuffed cabbage soup,” said Rex Cone, Senior Center Director. “All proceeds go to programming at the New Britain Senior Center.”

Former Senior Center Director Mike Karwan will come in to make 5” apple pies for dessert.

Everyone is invited. You do not have to be a member of the senior center or even a senior to attend the bazaar.
