This year Main Street U.S.A. will be held on Saturday, Sept. 9th, from noon to 10 p.m. at Walnut Hill Park as new events continue to help the celebration expand. (rain date is Sept. 10).

“We expanded the kids zone due to popular demand,” said Mayor Erin E. Stewart. “We have all the food vendors. A beer and wine garden and we are going to have a 100 foot slide. A 45 foot ferris wheel is also new. It continues to grow.”

A “kids zone” will engage kids between noon and 7 p.m. Wristbands will be sold for $10, or a family four-pack for $30, which will allow kids unlimited use the inflatable moonbounces and corn maze, a 24’ climbing wall, the ferris wheel, the slide, walk-around clowning and magicians, and more.

The Kids Zone Stage will have more of a family focus with performances to engage young and old. The stage, located adjacent to the Kids Zone amusements, will feature musical entertainment with T-Bone at 1 p.m.; an interactive family game show with Jock in the Box Entertainment at 2 p.m.; The Amazing Andy’s magic show at 3 p.m.; a live animal demonstration with Curious Creatures at 4 p.m.; and a comedy magic circus show with Sammie and Tudie at 5 p.m.

Opening ceremonies will start at 1 p.m. and there will be three bands. Shaded Soul from 4-5:30; Last Licks (a local band) 6 to 7:30 p.m. and The Zoo will play from 8-10 p.m. They will be at the main stage, located at the Darius Miller Memorial Bandshell.

“The Zoo has a really big following and play a lot in downtown Hartford. That should be exciting,” said Stewart. “The fireworks will take place during the music at 8:45 p.m.”

There are additional vendors this year. Food vendor spots filled up early. Other vendor spots are still available.

Behind the band shell on the interior loop road of Walnut Hill Park, are the food vendors set up to sell fried dough and other delicious fried treats, pizza, hot dogs and hamburgers, sausage and peppers, cultural foods, loaded baked potatoes, ice cream novelties, sodas and water. Further down the road will be arts and crafts vendors, corporate vendors, and civic groups who will sell their goods or promote their services.

Main Street U.S.A. is a celebration of New Britain’s melting pot of cultures.

“Main Street USA has been a beloved New Britain event for decades—It’s a fun-filled day for the family full of good food, music, entertainment and most importantly, community. It’s an opportunity to celebrate the rich diversity and heritage of our City and a chance to show visitors all that we have to offer. When we brought the festival back in 2015, after a 15 year hiatus, our Parks and Rec Department made a commitment to making the event bigger and better each year,” stated Mayor Stewart. Mayor Stewart went on to say “We hope to have it back downtown someday, but that won’t happen until all of our streetscape work is completed!”

A welcome stage, located at the north end of the park, will welcome guests who have used the shuttle bus throughout the day. Smaller stage acts, such as the Coracles and Whiskey, Wine, and Coke will fill the air with musical entertainment.

Helicopter rides will be offered for $20 per rider starting at 1 p.m. and running through 5 p.m. Don’t miss your chance to ride in a helicopter over our beautiful city. Limited rides will be offered during these times; arrive early to be sure to get a spot.

A beer garden will be open from noon to 9:30 p.m. for guests 21 and over. A valid ID will enable admittance into the tented area where beer and wine will be available for purchase. The beer garden will be positioned near the main stage on the Darius Miller Memorial Band Shell so guests will not miss any of the energizing musical entertainment. Near the beer garden there will be adult games, and a photo booth to capture your group’s event experience.

Plan to stay for the entire day and into the night for the fireworks display from the highest point of the park and will illuminate the sky. Great viewing locations throughout the park include the band shell area and the open space within the walking loop of Walnut Hill.

Free parking will be offered at two city garages for the duration of the event. Shuttle busses will pick-up and bring visitors to and from the event beginning at 11:45 a.m. The following locations will be open for Main Street U.S.A. parking: Badolato parking garage at 25 Washington St. and the garage at the New Britain Judicial Courthouse at 14 Pearl St. Parking will not be available at Walnut Hill Park for this event.
