Children’s Charities Tennis Classic

The 39th annual Children’s Charities Tennis Classic began play last Friday at Walnut Hill Park in New Britain that saw play in the Boys 14’s singles, Boys 16’s singles, Girls Open, and boys 18’s.

In Boys 14’s singles, the championship match saw Donovan Rodriguez of Ellington defeating Kyle Vu of Berlin in an exciting match, 6-1, 4-6, 11-9 in a tiebreaker/3rd set. Boys 16’s singles saw Sean Davis of Newington defeat fellow teammate David Magsayo 6-3,6-1 to capture the Boys 16’s crown. In the finals of the Girls Open singles, Victoria Kilbourne of Bristol defeated Abigail Weaver of Plantsville 6-1, 6-1. In afternoon action, the Boys 18’s championship saw two time defending champion Joey Conrod of Sandy Hook defeating Hussein Akbar by a score of 6-0,6-0. An interesting note, Joey’s father, Dr. Thomas Conrod, won the Boy’s 18’s singles back in 1982 and 1983.

Day two of the Children’s Charities Tennis Classic took place at the Newington Tennis Center in Newington, Connecticut due to the inclement weather. The indoor play began with some great competition in the parent/child doubles division with four time defending champion Joey and Dr. Tom Conrod of Sandy Hook defeating Eleanor and Dr. Ben Doolittle of Kensington in a thrilling match by a score of 7-6, 6-4. This was the Conrods fifth parent/child championship. Boy’s doubles action saw the team of Hussein Akbar and Syed Nagvi from Windsor Locks/ West Hartford defeating Sean Davis and Lukas Klin of Newington by a score of 6-1, 7-5. In the Grand Masters final on Saturday afternoon, Nick Savino of Bristol who plays for Lynchburg College in Virginia defeated Saeed Akbar of Windsor Locks by a score of 6-1, 6-1.

The 39th annual Children’s Charities Tennis Classic wrapped up play on Sunday afternoon at the New Britain High School tennis courts. The afternoon saw play in three divisions including; mixed doubles, girl’s doubles, and young adult doubles. In mixed doubles, the team of Victoria Kilbourne and Colin Savino of Bristol teamed up to defeat Timmy Davenport of Farmington and Juju Oliver of New Britain in the finals match 7-5, 6-2. In girl’s doubles the championship was won by the team of Elyssa Tomczyk and Coral Tommervik of Plainville defeating the Newington High School team of Maura Klin and Elizabeth Taschuk by a score 6-1, 6-0. In the young adult doubles division six teams participated and the team of Mike Rabiej and Keith Lebel of Plantsville/Southington took first place with Ryan Fuffo and Sean Davis of Newington capturing second honors.

Don Lukowski, Chairman and founder of the event, stated, “I am very grateful to all the players, sponsors, and my committee for a very successful tournament this year. Thanks to all involved, we have been able to raise a little over six thousand dollars to date for the pediatric autism center at the Hospital for Special Care. Thanks to all involved we will be able to do much to better the lives of those young patients at the hospital”.

The tournament to date has raised over $5,200 for the Pediatric Autism Unit at the Hospital for Special Care.
