I heard the first week of Yankees baseball called ‘Over Reaction Week’ on the radio. It sure is true. When the Yankees were 1-4, I was sure they would never win another game this season. Then, Catcher Gary Sanchez and first basemen Greg Bird got injured. I was ready to call the season over.
But, alas, the team won three straight games and things are looking up again. Michael Pineda pitched a great game and CC Sabatha has looked strong. Luis Severino pitched okay, but Masahiro Tanaka has not pitched like a Number 1 starter.
Chase Headley has played well as has Ronald Torreyes. Those are probably two players I did not expect to lead the team. Aaron Judge is getting good at bats and has three homers.
Sanchez will be out a month. Bird should be returning any day.
It seems this team needs a few things. Experience is key. They need to tough it out when they are losing. When they are winning it will look easy. The young players need to feel the differences and adjust.
I do see 83 wins coming. I feel there will be losing streaks and win streaks.
The team cannot just rely on Sanchez and Bird. It needs to be a team effort. Each day someone needs to step up.
The Yankees aren’t the only ones struggling out of the gate. Boston, Toronto, Houston and San Francisco have looked shaky.
The White Sox and Cardinals come to New York this week. The Yanks need to go 4-2. That will pull them out of a hole before heading to Pittsburgh next week.
Look for Brett Gardner, Matt Holiday and some of the more experienced players to lead the way this week.
