The New Britain Youth Theater (NBYT) has moved its office, classroom, rehearsal space, and a small studio performance space to Berlin. NBYT is now sharing space in the New Britain-Berlin YMCA Program Center at 362 Main St.

“We were at the YMCA in New Britain for a couple of years, but they wanted our space for another purpose,” said Darren Farrington Executive and Artistic Director of NBYT. “They offered us the option of program space in downtown Berlin. We are there now and still running many of our programs in New Britain.”

NBYT has served thousands of children and teens with performances, classes, summer programs, school programs, and homeschool programs since 2010. Participants have come to NBYT from over fifty towns throughout Connecticut, and some audience members have come even further.

In its new studio space, NBYT is offering classes in acting and improv, and the theater will produce smaller-scale productions with young actors.

“We’ll also maintain a presence in New Britain, where we offer school programs and performances, including a planned June 2017 teen production of Romeo and Juliet on the grounds of the New Britain Museum of American Art. Some programs will be done at Holmes Elementary School,” said Farrington. “Programs start for age 5 through teens.”

The first major event will be a seventh birthday party for NBYT itself (NBYT was founded on March 15, 2010) on March 18 that will introduce patrons and guests to the new space. The birthday event will include performances, desserts, a cash mocktail bar, and a raffle to benefit the theater.

The first production in Berlin will be “Peter Rabbit Is Lost!” on March 31 through April 2. Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. Tickets are $6 for children and $8 for adults.

A new session of Spring classes starts on March 25 for age 5 and up.

Summer program registration has begun. The summer musical is “The Lion King”. It will be done at a New Britain school.

NBYT’s summer production is for ages 7 through 14. (Disney Theatricals limits participants to age 14, but teens ages 15 through 18 may apply to be production assistants.)

Rehearsals will be held over a four-week half-day program (Mondays through Fridays) with a weekend of performances at the end of the program. All children who register will be cast in the show. Roles will be determined based on pre-program auditions to be scheduled in June. Over the course of the program, the cast will rehearse the performance—including music and choreography—and will also help to make some of the props and costumes to be used in the show.

Dates: Monday, July 3 through Friday, July 28 (except July 4). Performance Dates: July 28, 29 & 30. Cost per child: $400. Deposit: $100 upon registration, balance due by June 15.

NBYT is dedicated to enriching the lives of children and young adults by encouraging creative thinking and collaborative teamwork, fostering self-confidence and self-esteem, and developing social and academic skills through involvement in high-quality, low-cost programs in the performing arts
