The Mayor’s Marketing and Branding Roundtable narrowed down the City slogans to four this week and now residents are asked to vote on their favorite.
“We wanted to have some fun on the slogans and we could not agree on three, so there are four,” said Mayor Erin Stewart. “They encompass a lot of things. Some are a nod to the past but some also encompass the future. We wanted to identify several areas that emerged from our roundtable discussions.”
The City heard that it is welcoming, connective, it has a central location and it is full of surprises and change.
“The taglines we came up with reflect those areas. We are trying to convey messages to different audiences including visitors, newcomers and residents,” said Mayor Stewart. “We want newcomers to know New Britain is culturally diverse and everyone is welcome here. We also want to talk about businesses too. We support our business community.”
The four slogans chosen were “Connect and Bee Inspired”; “History. Honey. Home.”; “Because Old is Boring” and “Experience the New”.
“This first one is in honor of our connective resources. The second one is three words and the third one tries to capitalize on a play of words. The last one everybody gravitated to, to emphasize the New in New Britain,” said Stewart. “We looked at other slogans across the country and we liked the ones that were quirky.”
The bee theme will be part of the logo. It is still being worked on, but the honeycomb will be a part of it.
“The theme is around the beehive, honeycomb, honey bee. People need to remember that when choosing a logo,” Stewart added.
Results will be revealed in January and it will be connected with the logo.
The logo will go on a variety of materials such as website, social media, hats and t-shirts, and banners around the City.
“I think the group is really excited. We are looking forward to feedback from residents on which slogan they think is the best,” said Mayor Stewart. “People may have some other ideas and they can put them in. We started this process in April and this is what we came up with.”
A survey was taken earlier in the year through the Greater New Britain Chamber of Commerce. About 350 people took the survey. Seventy percent were residents and the others were business owners.
Some items this study is meant to achieve includes: Changing the image of a city and communicating; a positive message that everyone can get behind; can have far reaching influence on things that matter to a city most.
The following identifies what the city hopes to achieve with a new brand: Competing more effectively for investment dollars from: Business investment, Private investment and State and Federal government; Promoting the downtown; Attracting visitors; and residents to experience the city in a new way; Recruiting job-creating businesses; Changing the image of the city to be proactive instead of reactive; To be more visible statewide and regionally; Better utilization of existing marketing resources; Turning taxes, education and safety into positive messages; Strengthen arts and culture; and more CCSU student presence in the city.
The City hopes to roll out a new brand in February that identifies all physical and digital elements that need updating and/or replacement with the new logo and visual identity.
Starting in May there will be City Brochures, a Separate City Event Website, 30-sec. video spots, TV commercials, Brand Event, Social Media and an Instagram for pics of the City.
The goal is by June 2018 to identify key external stakeholders who can be active supporters of the brand and partner with them to promote the brand.
The survey will be up for one week, so voting ends Nov. 10.
