According to national publications, the most popular Halloween costumes this year are expected be based on Pokemon Go, Suicide Squad (Harley Quinn), Olympic athletes (Simone Biles), political figures (Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump) and Ghostbusters.

This year there will be plenty of opportunity to wear costumes including the Parks and Recreation’s Halloween Spooktacular on Saturday, Oct. 29 from 1-4 p.m. and the New Britain Halloween Trick or Treat Safe Zone on Oct. 31 from 5-7 p.m. downtown.

Both events include costume contests.

At the Safe Zone there will be 9 children winners from the costume parade and 2 adult prizes. Children will receive gift certificates from Amato’s Toy and Hobby. The top 3 children will also get MP3 players from Jaws Pawn Shop. Adult winners will receive gift certificates from Great Taste, Frosty Mug or 4 tickets to the New Britain Bees.

Judges will make choices based on those that attend the Costume Parade.

Mayor Erin E. Stewart will also present a Mayor’s Prize and take photos with the winners.

Participants are asked to gather in front of City Hall and follow the directions of Emcee Stephen Hard to march to Central Park led by Sting from the New Britain Bees.

This week the New Britain City Journal asked Facebook readers what they or their children or grandchildren planned to wear for Halloween.

Here are some answers:

Annemarie Nauss - “My granddaughter that lives with me is going to be a ballerina. She’s three.”

Christina Ann Rosenblatt - “Daughter is going to be a genie.”

Juanita Santana - “Granddaughter as Poison Ivy, DC Girl Hero.”

Kaitlyn Clements - “Godzilla and I’m Mothra.”

Wanda Konieczna Urquhart - “Ava is going as batgirl, Liam is going as a skeleton, and Emmalyn is going as I think Rainbow Dash? But that can change up until the final bewitching day!”

Carmen Manny Otero - “Grandson is 3 yrs old he will be Batman.”

Shawna Rose - “A fairy godmother. And the scary thing from Scream.”

Kimberly Tinder - “My daughter is going to be a minion this year.”

According to livingonthecheap.com the cheapest and easiest costumes to make include a mummy using toilet paper to wrap yourself up, a zombie using old torn-up clothes, eye shadow and food coloring, a vampire using a three-piece suit or a ghost using a white bed sheet.

It is requested that clown costumes are not worn this year to the Halloween Trick or Treat Safe Zone event.
