Family Fun - Autumn

As we approach the end of September my thoughts turn to the fairs and festivals and all the wonderful bounty of the season’s harvest. We look forward to seeing the giant pumpkins and baby chicks and the smells of fried dough. Delighted screams are heard from the rides at the fair and the beautiful colors of Autumn blaze from the trees. Scarecrows, pumpkins and apples adorn porches and the days slowly begin to cool. Good bye Summer, It’s Fall y’all!
This week we make a couple of scarecrows for the windowsills and house plants or just for a puppet show before they gather in a small votive holder on the kitchen table.

Materials:
Popsicle sticks
Straw hats
Small scraps of fabric
Yarn
A bit of straw or dried grass
Hot Glue Gun and glue sticks
Elmers glue
Brown Paint
Orange paint
Wine corks
Sharp knife or an Exacto knife
Sharpie
Googly Eyes
How to:
Popsicle stick Scarecrows
I started with the wine cork and the Popsicle stick. With a sharp knife make a slit in the narrow end of the cork. Dab a bit of white glue in the slit and on the end of your Popsicle stick. Insert the Popsicle stick into the cork. The glue will help hold everything in place. You now have a head and body. With your bits of fabric cut a 2 inch square. Fold in half to form a triangle. This is the scarf. With the pointy side of the triangle pointing down wrap the fabric around the stick. There will be excess. Glue it down and trim any unnecessary bits to reduce bulk.
Now for the face. Glue googly eyes in place and use your sharpie to draw the mouth. I added a couple of lines on the mouth to look like stitches. Your nose can be a tiny snip of yarn like I did or a triangle fo orange fabric or even just an orange dot with a Sharpie.
Let’s work on the hair and hat to complete the look. Cut your yarn longer than you think to go over both sides and the top of the cork. You can trim after. Glue the top of the cork and stick the yarn on. Add more glue to the hat and pop that right on top. Adjust the hair and you are done! It’s fun to make a couple of them.
Cardboard tube scarecrow
Paint your tube, I chose orange on the top and brown on the bottom leaving about an inch unpainted for the face. You can reverse that color option if you wish.
A couple of googly eyes and a mouth drawn on with the sharpie and you are ready for the hat and hair!
Using your dried grass, straw or yarn affix the “hair” to the inside of the hat. Glue to the tube and you have a scarecrow!
