Family Fun - Flubber

This week we decided to try a couple of recipes here in the shop. First up was the Monster Slime! Oh. My. Stars! That was an epic fail! We were stained blue almost up to the elbows from the glitter paint and it got sticky but didn’t quite form properly. So we tried again. Yikes! This recipe needs some work. So, onward we went to try something new.

Flubber!

We are very happy to report that this worked perfectly first try! Thanks to http://laughingkidslearn.com/ for great directions!

Materials:

2 medium sized bowls

teaspoon

3/4 cup cold water

1/2 cup very HOT water

1 Cup Elmer’s glue

1 tsp borax

Food coloring

How to:

  1. Mix the cold water, 4 drops of food coloring and glue in one bowl. Mix and mix well. Option, add a little bit of glitter to your mix.
  2. In the second bowl mix the borax and hot water. Stir until the Borax is completely dissolved.
  3. SLOWLY add the glue mixture to the borax mixture and stir well.

As you stir you will see the mixture start to change! You might have a little extra water at the end which you can just pour off.

This rubbery mixture is such fun to use in play. Tianna rolled it into a ball then twisted it. The shape held. She found it’s very stretchy and fun to pick up and manipulate. She crunched it up into small parts and then put it back in the bowl. Amazingly enough it returned to it’s liquid looking shape. We used a large clear glass bowl for her to play with it in.

There are many websites that offer great recipes and the science behind why this works.
