The summer is flying by at the speed of a rocket! The count down has begun for the start of school. All the conversations here in the store fly around what team the kids are on and school supply shopping. So let’s have fun today with a little science and math. Rockets! Let’s play with rockets! These are so fun and easy to make. The supplies are few and the fun is endless. I think everyone will enjoy this activity. After you have made a few it might be fun to have a contest.

Materials needed:

Construction paper or newspaper

2 different size straws - one thin and the other a larger opening. They need to slide into each other

Tape

Crayons, markers or colored pencils

Scissors

How to:

Draw a rocket shape on the paper and cut it out. Decorate your rocket with whatever design looks good to you using your crayons, markers or colored pencils.

On the back of your rocket tape the larger straw. Tape the top of the rocket closed and cut the straw about an inch longer than your rocket.

Using the thinner straw insert it into the larger straw and BLOW!

Variations:

Draw another rocket in a different shape. Does it fly higher? Faster?

Blow up into the air then try blowing straight out. Which way does your rocket fly faster?
