Spotlight on the Library

September is a spotlight month for the library with two big library doings: Literary Libations IV and National Library Card Sign-up Month.

Literary Libations, one of our major fundraisers, helps support our library budget. This year, the event will be held at Trinity on Main on Friday, Sept. 9, 5 pm to 8 pm. A light supper will be served by Angelo’s Market, with dessert provided by Café Beauregard along with a cash bar. Board members are preparing tempting baskets for a drawing.

A unique feature of the evening will be a local Authors Showcase, shining on the talented authors of our community. Perfect sense – we are a library. Our community has amazing talent. How many New Britain authors can you think of? Sixteen local authors, with ties to the community, will be joining us. They live, work or grew up in New Britain. These authors bring a variety of offerings; children and young adult books, memoirs, poetry, history, mysteries, crime, Frank Sinatra, Philip Roth, horses, inspirational and even e-books. Meet the authors; hear about their books which will also be available for purchase.

New Britain’s own Poet Laureate, Michael “Chief” Peterson, will introduce the evening and read some of his work. Music will be provided by Ken Griffen. Tickets ($40 each or $20 for student tickets) are available at the library or online at Trinityonmain.org. Support the library, support our local talent and have an enjoyable evening.

September is also Library Card Sign-up Month. We join with public libraries, nationwide, and the American Library Association; to make sure that every student has the most important school supply of all – a free library card. We take it one step further. We want everyone to get a library card. Libraries provide rich resources for every age. With a card you can check out books, movies, magazines, books on CD, and music CDs. You can also download books, audio books and magazines. A library card will give you access to a variety of databases from the comfort of your home. Discount passes for museums and CT State Parks are available to borrow. Enjoy free programming, computer classes, homework help and guidance and information from knowledgeable library staff. We offer computers with high speed internet access and free Wi-Fi is available, too. So if you know someone who doesn’t have a card, tell them to come visit us and discover our rich resources. See you in September.
