There have been many festivals in New Britain, but none quite like what is coming on Aug. 27.
KOHOE Centers and the Latino Festival Coalition will present its First Annual Latin Festival at Walnut Hill Park scheduled for Saturday, August 27.
The Latin Festival Event is a collaborative outreach event for the community of New Britain, and aligns perfectly with the Foundation’s areas of interest: art, culture & heritage, and community. The purpose of this event is to bring the Latino community together. New Britain has many individuals that are dedicated to improving their communities. The Latin Festival is an opportunity to showcase the diversity within the Latino community through arts and culture.
The idea came about as the New Britain Latino Coalition asked about having an event at KOHOE.
“We want it to be more for families so we decided to do it at the park with no liquor. We just wanted to bring unity to the City of New Britain and be something that families can enjoy,” said Michelle Ruiz, KOHOE President & CEO. “People can have a good time between the diversity of music and culture. There will be a kid’s fair and resource tables as well as a diversity of Latin music as well as faith music.”
Performers will be from Peru, Mexico, Columbia and Spain.
“Although we speak the same language there is a different culture and dialect,” said Ruiz. “It really is about bringing the City together and doing something positive.”
There will be an inspirational speaker and a kid who was on the Voice “LABOZ Kid” who placed second and is from Massachusetts that will be the main attraction.
Some of the other activities planned for the Latin Fest Event include:
- Artists, musicians and entertainment
- Food vendors
- Motivation and empowering guest speakers
- Vendors, education and resource tables
- Kids Fair with Back to school backpacks for the first 200
The event is from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and depends entirely on corporate and private sponsorships for financial support in funding our event.
Their goal is to partner with organizations that are committed to improving the wellbeing and quality of life of the citizens of our city. Current partners include, New Britain Latino Coalition, City of New Britain, Downtown District, Mayor’s Trophy Charitable Fund, Klingberg Family Centers, McDonalds, Dunkin Donuts, Farmington Bank, Rehoboth Church, Light of Hope Ministries, Dressler & Dressler at Law, TD Banks, Community Foundation of New Britain, Tomasso Brothers, Guidas, Chamber of Commerce and many more.
