Family Fun – Father’s Day

It’s all about Dad! Father’s Day is June 19. Are ya ready? Sometimes it can be hard to find that perfect gift for Dad or Grampa or your favorite Uncle or the Man in your life. Well, this is a wonderful personalized, handmade sure to please gift! Not only is it great looking when you are finished but it’s really fun to make.
This week we are making a customized picture frame or Dad’s name in shells. I can’t be the only one that goes to the beach and spends half my time walking and collecting pretty rocks and shells! Judging from the supplies here in the shop lots of you do too!
So here we go!
Supplies:
Pencil
Ruler
Lots of shells in assorted sizes and colors
A few pretty rocks
Cardboard
Tacky Glue
Popsicle stick
Box cutter or strong scissors
Wood photo frame
Photo
Soda tab
How to:
With sturdy cardboard in hand decide what letters you are going to need. Are you just doing a giant initial or his name or Dad?
Once decided, draw with a pencil and ruler your desired letters.
Using your scissors or box cutter cut out your letters.
I used a Popsicle stick to spread a nice thick layer of tacky glue all over my letter. I did one letter at a time.
Once covered with glue all the way to the edges the fun begins!
Start adding your shells. Place your biggest shells first. Scatter them around randomly. Now move down to a smaller size shell. I like some up and some down. Try to scatter the colors of the shells. When no more medium shells can fit it’s time to move down to the smallest shells. Fill in all the little spaces. Lay flat to dry completely. When completely dry I glued a soda tab on the back so that I could hang my letters.
The same process is used for the photo frame. I used an unfinished wood frame and added a photo of the beach. Pretty!
To extend the activity it’s nice to share a book!
